Driveways Middleton
S P Groundworks & Driveways
Block paving, resin, tarmac, printed concrete and patio installations across Middleton and North Manchester
We are a Middleton firm - Ennerdale Road, M24 - and for over twenty years we have been digging out cracked concrete, weedy gravel and sunken flags across Alkrington, Langley, Hopwood, Rhodes and Boarshaw and putting proper driveways and patios in their place. Proper means the 200mm you never see is built as carefully as the 60mm you do. That is the whole difference between a drive that is still flat in fifteen years and one that ruts the first wet winter.

Built for Middleton ground
Why a Middleton driveway needs more than a thin base
Middleton sits in the valley of the River Irk on thick glacial clay over Coal Measures. Clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it is dry, and Rochdale borough gets more rain than the city - close to 1,000mm a year on the Hopwood side. Put a slab of concrete or a skim of tarmac straight on top of that and it will crack along the movement lines within a few winters, which is exactly what we find under most of the drives we replace. So we build for the ground we have.
- ✓Excavation to 200mm or more on clay plots, with a geotextile membrane where the ground is soft, and MOT Type 1 compacted in two layers rather than one
- ✓Edging blocks and kerbs haunched in concrete on every drive so the surface cannot spread - loose edges are the second most common failure we see
- ✓Falls set across the whole drive to a linear channel, gully or soakaway, so water leaves the surface and stays on your land as Rochdale Borough Council expects
- ✓Dropped kerbs applied for and built to the council's spec on terrace fronts around Boarshaw, Rhodes and the town centre
- ✓Materials chosen for the street: clay block for the Alkrington Garden Village semis, resin or concrete block for the Langley and Hollin estates, natural stone where the house is stone
- ✓Waste, spoil and skips managed by us, with the road swept every evening - your neighbours will notice that as much as the drive

Why S P
Why Middleton homeowners keep passing our number on
A lot of our work comes from the same streets - a neighbour sees the drive going in, watches how the crew leaves the road each night, and rings. That only happens if the job is done the way we say it will be.
-
Scott is on site, not in an office
The person who measures up and quotes is the person running the job. Questions get answered on the day, not passed up a chain.
-
Every quote is itemised
Excavation depth, base spec, edging, drainage and surface, each with a figure. Two quotes from us on the same job would be identical.
-
Groundworks are our trade
Drainage, footings, retaining walls, soakaways - we do the heavy end of the job ourselves rather than laying a nice surface on someone else's base.
-
Twenty years of local references
Ask for drives we did a decade ago in Alkrington, Hopwood or Blackley and go and look at them. That is the only guarantee that really means anything.
-
Tidy, on time and finished
Start and finish dates on the quote, the road swept nightly, and no half-done edges left for 'next week'.
“Around three in five of the driveways we replace in Middleton had less than 100mm of hardcore under them - some had none at all.”
Based on jobs handled by S P Groundworks & Driveways over the last few years. It is why we talk about the base before we talk about the block.
How we work
Seven steps to a driveway in Middleton that stays flat
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
-
Free site visit
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Middleton clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
-
Written, itemised quote
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
-
Excavation and sub-base
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
-
Edge restraints
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
-
Drainage and falls
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
-
Laying the driveway
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
-
Handover and guarantee
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

The guarantee
Every drive we lay in Middleton is put in writing
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.
- Sub-base depth and compaction stated on the quote, not left to chance
- Edging set in concrete so the surface cannot spread or rock
- Settlement, sinking or lifting caused by our work put right free
- Materials backed by the manufacturer on top of our own cover

What a driveway costs in Middleton
Prices are per square metre and include taking the old surface out, the sub-base, edging and the new surface. They are starting points - a plot that needs a retaining wall, a long run of drainage or a dropped kerb will cost more, and we say so on the site visit rather than on the invoice.

FAQ
Driveway questions from Middleton homeowners
Do I need planning permission for a driveway in Middleton?
Almost never. Middleton comes under Rochdale Borough Council, and the national rule since 2008 is that you can pave a front garden of any size without an application as long as the surface is permeable or the rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway inside your own boundary. Block paving, resin bound and tarmac with a drainage channel all qualify. The exceptions are listed houses and the conservation areas - the Edgar Wood buildings around Long Street and parts of Alkrington and Rhodes - where the council may want a say on materials. We check your address before we quote.
How much does a new driveway cost in Middleton?
For a typical two-car front on a semi, tarmac starts from around £45 per square metre, block paving from £60, printed concrete from £65 and resin bound from £70, all including excavation and the sub-base. That puts most Middleton drives between £3,000 and £8,000. The estimator further up this page gives a guide range for your size, and the cost page explains what moves the price.
How long does it take?
A two-car drive is three to five working days from breaking ground to handover. Add a couple of days if we are building a patio, steps or walls at the same time. You will need to park on the road while the work is on, and we tell you exactly which days on the quote.
Which is best for Middleton - block paving, resin or tarmac?
All three work well here if the base is right. Block paving is what most Middleton semis and terraces suit, it drains through the joints and single blocks can be lifted if a service ever needs digging up. Resin bound gives a smooth, modern, weed-free finish and drains through itself. Tarmac is the cheapest per metre and sensible on a big plain drive. The one we steer people away from is a plain concrete slab with no falls, because that is what most of the cracked drives we dig out turn out to be.
Will the crew leave the street tidy?
Yes. Skips are booked in advance, the road is swept every evening, and everything - old concrete, spoil, offcuts, wrapping - goes away with us. Scott runs the job himself and the same faces are on site from start to finish.
Do you cover areas outside Middleton?
Yes. From Ennerdale Road we cover the whole of north Manchester and the boroughs around it - Rochdale, Heywood, Oldham, Chadderton, Royton, Bury, Prestwich, Whitefield, Radcliffe, Blackley and Failsworth all have their own pages. If you are further out, ring and ask.
Areas we cover
Middleton first, then everywhere within half an hour
Middleton is home - Alkrington, Langley, Hopwood, Rhodes, Boarshaw, Moorclose, Birch and Slattocks are all a few minutes from the yard. Beyond that we work across north Manchester and the three boroughs that meet here: Rochdale, Oldham and Bury. Each area page below covers the local ground, the council and the kind of houses we work on there.
If your town is not listed, ring anyway. We regularly go further for the right job.
